Trader Joe’s Gyros and Naan with homemade tzatziki.
I am a huge fan of easy meals. One of my husband’s favorite snack/meal is gyros. You can find gyros all over Chicago whether it’s at one of the many Greek restaurants or hot dog establishments. In an attempt to save money and not go out to eat all the time, I started making my own (easy) gyros meal at home. Now I know that you can make your own gyro meat with all kinds of meat but for this post, I’ll be making things easy with items you can find at your local Trader Joe’s.
First: My homemade tzatziki
(You can totally just buy the tzatziki but it’s so easy to make and I like the freshness)
1/2 a large English or seedless cucumber
1 1/2 cups plain Greek yogurt
2 large garlic cloves
2 TBSP extra virgin olive oil
1 TBSP lemon juice
1/2 TSP black pepper
1 TBSP minced fresh dill
Salt to taste
-Grate cucumber and squeeze the liquid out using a cheese cloth or paper towels. Once the liquid is out, add to yogurt.
-Grate or finely mince garlic. Add to yogurt with the rest of the ingredients.
-Salt and pepper to taste.
-Refrigerate at least 30 mins to let the flavor blend.
For the Gyro and Naan:
Here are the items I buy from Trader Joe’s.
For the gyros, it’s fully cooked so all you would have to do is heat it up in the microwave if you want. I, however, like to put in the a 400 degree oven for 15 mins. I like the crisp it gives the gyro meat and you’ll need the oven for the naan anyways. For the Naan, I just follow the directions on the back. It’s basically 5 mins in a 400 degree oven.
When the gyro is done, I assemble the meat on the naan along with some thinly sliced onions, tomatoes, and my homemade tzatziki.
With this easy “homemade” gyro recipe, I will never have to go to a restaurant or hot dog stand to buy gyros. I like to have them on standby at home so I can whip it up any time. The gyro meat is not frozen when you buy it but I like to have a couple boxes in the freezer to extend it’s shelf life. The naan is frozen so it’s easy to have on hand. You can use pita bread but I find it easy to have the naan. Hope you enjoy!
Disclaimer: I was neither paid nor approached for this post. I merely like to share my favorite easy meals and Trader Joe’s is one of my favorite places to shop.
