Newborn Must-Haves

My husband and I welcomed our beautiful baby girl, Kinsley, at the end of March. She is literally our whole world. She’s our first baby so of course a lot of preparations and research were conducted before she made her arrival. Through all my research, there are some things I wish I would have learned beforehand so I’m here to share them with you.

With all the new and old baby gear out there, it’s so easy to get overwhelmed. As new technologies arise, new inventions and techniques are hitting the market. Here are some of the baby items I loved and some that were not as helpful. I believe in frugality and no one can attest to that than my husband. I believe that you don’t have to spend millions to get the things you want with style but I do believe in splurging on things that will last longer and have multiple uses.

Stroller: We have the UppaBaby Vista Stroller travel system. This means it comes with the carseat, a bassinet attachment for when the kids are younger, and of course the regular seat. It is a splurge but there are so many attachment and possibilities to the stroller itself. This is definitely a must on a baby registry. Hopefully someone will gift you one. We plan on having more children so being able to roll around with more than one kid on a stroller without getting those double wide stroller is amazing especially if you live in a city or apartment. Seriously how do mom with the side-by-side strollers get through doors?

Clothing: Ok, I get it. Baby clothes are everywhere and they are so cute. I have done a lot of shopping for Kinsley before and after she was born. Since taking her home from the hospital, I’ve learned what is the best for taking care of a newborn. Sure you want to dress them up in cute little outfits but I seriously think that for the first month or so, babies should be in sleep and play onesies. The best are the ones with built-in fold-over hand covers. Trust me on this. You will not want to mess with pants and mittens when you’re up in the middle of the night changing your crying baby. We found ours at Target. They are the Cloud Island brand and they come in 3 packs. I seriously cannot get enough of these. They are the best for a growing baby.

Feeding: Since I am primarily nursing Kinsley, we decided to buy breastfeeding friendly bottles. We use Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature bottles. We also have Dr. Brown’s bottles but Kinsley prefers the Tommee Tippee and it has not caused any nipple confusion at all. As far as pacifiers, we did not introduce one to her until she was about 4 weeks old. Our pediatrician recommended this since we are breastfeeding. We love the Avent Soothies and the Wubbanub Pacifiers. They are the cutest and they are great for not falling on the ground.

Another thing to get is a microwavable sanitizer. Saves a lot of time instead of boiling all the bottles and pacifiers.

Baby Gear: We have rockers, swings, a pack n play, Snoo, a mini crib, and a bassinet. Yes, I know we have a ton and we don’t really need all of it but most of them were gifts from our registry. There are so many things you can get nowadays it’s overwhelming. So here are my must haves

Rocker- we have the Fisher-Price Sweet Surroundings Monkey Deluxe Auto Rock ‘n Play Sleeper. Kinsley loves it and it rocks automatically so you don’t have to sit there rocking it. Definitely a must.

Swing: we have the Graco Simple Sway Stratus Baby Swing. So Kinsley has only been on the swing a number of times so I can’t really say yay or nay on this one. One thing about it that we love is the music that you can play on it. Ridiculous I know but if your baby likes to swing this is a good one.

Snoo– for those of you who don’t know what a Snoo is, it’s a bassinet that sways and responds to your baby’s cries and movements at night. It has a sack that keeps the baby in a swaddle like position and keeps the baby on their back. Honestly this bassinet is a little pricey but if your baby likes it, you can definitely get more sleep with it. There are other bassinets out there at a lower price if you don’t want to splurge on this one.

Hygiene: We use Aveno, Mustela, and Johnson & Johnson products for bath and lotion. I personally prefer using Aquaphor as a face moisturizer for Kinsley since her skin is so sensitive. It has really help her skin get back to normal after all the weather changes and just normal everyday irritants. Definitely a must have.

I’m sure I’ll discover more things to include but these are definitely my must haves. Next will be baby items to skip.
